Welcome to the Scores & Recordings page! Please scroll down for downloadable bi-lingual compilations of Ukrainian sacred music and below that, tables of scores of individual selections, many with recordings. Selections suitable for concert programs, all with recordings, are listed here.
Holy Family has been singing and building on the repertoire assembled on this site since the choir's inception in the 1950's. The music, much of it composed in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, draws on the Byzantine tradition. The bi-lingual texts are in two of the vernacular languages used in church services today - Ukrainian and English. Some background:
Scores - Compilations and Individual Pieces: The scores are available below as compilations (Divine Liturgy, Hymns, Propers, Nativity, Resurrection) or, farther down, as individual selections with recordings. All of the Ukrainian-language scores include in-line transliterations; the English-language scores are set to the same music. Some selections suitable for concert performances are featured here.
Recordings: These recordings were made during services of our own Shrine of the Holy Family choir. We trust our church-community choir conveys the beauty of this music.
Languages: Many of the texts were originally in Old Church Slavonic (OCS). These Ukrainian and English texts use the current liturgical translations as approved by the Synod of Bishops of the UGCC. For original OCS texts and scores, please contact ucns.hfchoir@gmail.com; we may be able to help locate them.
Composers: Many of the composers featured on this site faced the same historic struggles that are roiling Ukraine today:
- Mykola Leontovych, composer of the world-famous Carol of the Bells (originally Schedryk), inspired Ukrainians to celebrate their rich heritage, for which the Soviet regime had him assassinated in 1921.
- Oleksander Koshetz's international tours with the Ukrainian National Chorus were critically-acclaimed record-breaking phenomena. During one such tour the Ukrainian government fell to the Bolsheviks. For the next two decades, repeatedly denied passage home by the Soviet government, Koshetz lived in exile in the USA and Canada until his death in 1944.
- Kyrylo Stetsenko was exiled from Kyiv, Ukraine, by Russian authorities in 1911 for helping to publish his own arrangement of the Ukrainian National Anthem. The publisher, who refused to implicate Stetsenko, was sentenced to death.
- Other well-known Ukrainian composers (Vedel, Arkhanhelsky, Bortnyansky) are often mis-identified as being from Russia, which sought to subjugate both the culture as well as the nation of Ukraine. It is a centuries-old story.

Ukrainian and English Language Hymns (Entrance, Communion, Mnohaya Lita (celebratory "Many Years"), and Recessional) - Individual selections and recordings are available in the third table below. View individual Hymn selections.
Paschal Matins (mixed languages - Ukrainian and English) - All of the prayers and responses associated with the Paschal (Resurrectional) Matins service, all in Ukrainian, with select pieces in English as well.
Paschal Liturgical Compilation (mixed - Ukrainian and English) - The liturgical additions, substitutions and hymns that are specific to the Feast of Pascha (The Resurrection), including "Khrystos Voskres" ("Christ is Risen") in six different composed settings. Individual pieces and recordings are not yet available, but will be coming soon.
Christmas Liturgical Compilation (mixed - Ukrainian and English) - The liturgical additions, substitutions and hymns that are specific to the Feast of the Nativity. Individual pieces and recordings not yet available.
